How to Choose the Right Facial for Your Skin Type

Noir Aesthetics journal cover: How to choose the right facial for your skin type

The right facial for your skin type is the one that matches both your skin and your main concern. Oily, congested skin usually needs deep cleansing; dry or dull skin needs hydration and brightening; sensitive skin needs something gentle; mature skin benefits from hydration plus longer-term support. A short consultation confirms the details.

With so many facials on a menu, choosing can feel confusing. The simplest approach is to start with your skin rather than the treatment name, then let a professional check your thinking.

How do you know your skin type?

A simple test: cleanse your face, leave it bare for an hour or so, then look and feel.

  • Oily: shine across the whole face, often with visible pores and a tendency to congestion.
  • Dry: tight, sometimes flaky, with little or no shine.
  • Combination: oily through the forehead, nose and chin, normal or dry on the cheeks.
  • Sensitive: stings, flushes or reacts easily to products, heat or weather.

Skin type is only half the picture. Concerns such as pigmentation, dullness, breakouts or early signs of ageing sit on top of it, and they shift with season, age, hormones and stress. Lahore’s humid monsoon can make the same skin feel oilier in August than it does in the dry winter months.

Which facial suits oily or congested skin?

Oily skin benefits from treatments that deep-cleanse, extract congestion and balance oil without stripping. The acne-control hydrafacial is designed for this: it cleanses, exfoliates and extracts while targeting breakouts. A classic hydrafacial suits oily skin that simply needs regular maintenance.

If enlarged pores and persistent shine are the main frustration, a carbon laser treatment is worth asking about. A thin layer of carbon is applied to the skin and then passed over with a laser, which many people find leaves skin looking less oily and pores more refined. Because it is a laser treatment, it needs a proper assessment first, especially if you are prone to pigmentation. Carbon laser sits on our skin and aesthetic treatments menu rather than the spa menu.

Resist scrubbing oily skin hard at home; over-cleansing leaves it irritated and, for some people, seems to prompt more oil.

Which facial suits dry or dull skin?

Dry skin needs water and lipids put back, while dull skin needs gentle exfoliation to reveal a fresher surface. The two often go together, especially during winter and the smog season.

  • Korean facial: built around layered hydration for a soft, dewy finish — a natural fit for dry or dehydrated skin.
  • Brightening hydrafacial: combines cleansing and gentle exfoliation with hydration, focusing on dullness and uneven tone.
  • Derma/Brightening facial: a spa facial aimed at tired, lacklustre skin that has lost its glow.

You can see the Korean, Janssen and Derma/Brightening facials on our spa facials menu.

Which facial suits sensitive or combination skin?

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin needs gentle, soothing treatment with minimal friction, heat and fragrance. A classic hydrafacial is often well tolerated because its exfoliation is gentle and can be adjusted. A Janssen facial, which uses professional Janssen Cosmetics products selected for your skin, can also be tailored to calm reactive skin. Tell your therapist about products that have irritated you before, and about conditions such as rosacea or eczema, so the treatment can be modified.

Combination skin

Combination skin does well with a tailored approach that treats different zones differently — deeper cleansing through the T-zone, more hydration on the cheeks. A classic or deluxe hydrafacial can be adjusted this way, as can a Janssen facial, so one area is not over-dried while the other is overloaded.

If you are weighing up those three specifically, our comparison of the Korean, Janssen and hydrafacial treatments sets out how they differ side by side.

Which facial suits pigmentation-prone or mature skin?

Pigmentation-prone skin

If you tan easily or tend to get dark marks after spots, choose gentle brightening options and avoid anything aggressive that inflames the skin, because inflammation can leave more pigment behind. A brightening hydrafacial or a Derma/Brightening facial can help skin look more even. Patchy, symmetrical pigment across the cheeks or upper lip may be melasma, which needs its own plan and an in-person assessment.

Mature skin

Mature skin tends to be drier and to lose some firmness and radiance. The deluxe hydrafacial, the most comprehensive of the four grades, is a popular choice, as is the Korean facial for hydration. Facials improve how skin looks and feels, but they do not rebuild collagen in a significant way. If fine lines, loss of firmness or texture are the main concern, treatments such as microneedling or PRP may be more appropriate, and a consultation will tell you which.

Why a consultation beats choosing off a menu

Menus describe treatments; they cannot see your skin. Two people who both call themselves oily can need quite different things — one may be dehydrated underneath, the other may have active acne that needs a different approach altogether. A consultation lets a practitioner look closely, ask about your routine, medication and history, and recommend a facial that fits rather than one that merely sounds right.

It also catches what a menu cannot. If you are using retinoids or strong acids, taking isotretinoin, pregnant, or have an active infection, cold sore or flaring skin condition, some facials or steps may need to be adjusted or postponed.

How often should you have a facial, and how do you prepare?

For maintenance, many people have a facial every four to six weeks, roughly in line with the skin’s natural renewal cycle. If you are working on a specific concern, your practitioner may suggest a short course closer together before spacing visits out. You can check current rates on our price list.

Preparing for your facial

  • Pause retinoids and strong exfoliating acids for a few days beforehand, unless advised otherwise.
  • Avoid waxing, threading or other facial hair removal for a day or two before.
  • Do not book straight after a fresh tan or sunburn.
  • Arrive with clean skin if you can, or allow time to remove makeup.
  • Bring a list of the skincare products and medication you use.

Afterwards, keep skincare gentle for a day or two and wear sunscreen every day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the right facial for oily, acne-prone skin?

An acne-control hydrafacial is usually the starting point, because it deep-cleanses, exfoliates and extracts congestion while targeting breakouts. For persistent shine and enlarged pores, a carbon laser treatment may also be suggested after assessment. If you have active, inflamed or cystic acne, a consultation comes first, as some steps may need adjusting and medical advice may be needed.

Can I have a facial if my skin is sensitive?

Usually, yes, as long as the treatment is chosen and adjusted for sensitive skin. Gentle options such as a classic hydrafacial or a tailored Janssen facial are often well tolerated. Tell your therapist about past reactions, conditions such as rosacea or eczema and the products you use, so any step that could irritate your skin can be modified or left out.

How often should I get a facial?

For maintenance, many people have a facial every four to six weeks. If you are addressing a specific concern such as congestion or dullness, a short course spaced a few weeks apart may be recommended first, followed by less frequent visits. Your practitioner will suggest a rhythm that suits your skin and routine rather than a fixed schedule.

How far before a wedding should I have a facial?

Ideally several days to a week before the event, so any temporary redness or minor breakouts after extraction have time to settle. If you have never had a particular facial before, try it well in advance rather than in the final week. During the winter wedding season, book early so your facial fits comfortably around your Mehndi, Nikah and Barat dates.

Choosing a facial should not be guesswork. Your first skin consultation at our studio in DHA Phase 6, Lahore, is complimentary — book a skin consultation and we will look at your skin and recommend a facial that genuinely suits it.
