An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a titanium post, which then supports a crown. Unlike a denture it is fixed, and unlike a bridge it does not require cutting down the healthy teeth on either side. That is why it is usually the option a dentist will recommend first when a single tooth is missing and the surrounding bone is sound.
It is also the treatment where planning matters most. Before anything is placed we assess the health of your gums and the bone available to hold the implant. Not everyone is a candidate straight away — untreated gum disease or insufficient bone has to be addressed first, and we would rather tell you that at consultation than partway through.
Implant treatment runs over several appointments rather than one. The post is placed, then given time to integrate with the bone before the final crown is fitted. Your dentist will map out the full timeline, the number of visits, and the total cost before you commit to the first step.

Aftercare
Expect some swelling and tenderness for the first few days after placement. Stick to soft food, keep the area clean exactly as instructed, and take any prescribed medication as directed. Avoid smoking — it is one of the clearest risk factors for an implant failing to integrate.
Once healed, an implant is maintained like a natural tooth: brushing, flossing or interdental cleaning, and regular check-ups. Gum health around the implant is what determines how long it lasts, so scaling appointments matter more after an implant, not less.
It runs across several appointments over a number of months, because the implant needs time to integrate with the bone before the crown is fitted. Your dentist will give you a timeline specific to your case at consultation.
Placement is carried out with local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. Tenderness and swelling for a few days afterwards are normal and manageable. Tell us if you are anxious and we will take it at your pace.
